Moon in the 8th House

This is a house that’s charged with emotional intensity. Therefore, having the Moon in the 8th House makes the emotional responses of a person’s Moon sign very powerful and passionate, even if the Moon is in a light-hearted Air sign or reasonable Earth sign. This placement takes the feelings of their Moon and turns them up a few notches. But, the sign’s reactions and needs are often hidden or compartmentalized. With a Pisces Moon, for example, their vast imagination and desire for transcendence is something that will be dealt with in an even more internal manner when placed here. 8th House Moons deal with their inner lives in a private, solitary fashion that some might call secrecy. They feel the need to protect themselves as they know how easily their high intensity is misunderstood.

An alluring air of mystery will surround those with this position. It’s as if people can’t blatantly see their Moon sign but they can definitely sense it, smoldering beneath the surface. There is a labyrinth-like quality to those with their Moon in the 8th House, as you can never really figure them out. But, they prefer it this way. Even when they reveal themselves emotionally, they still keep a part of themselves or their lives concealed. Such behavior can easily veer into paranoia, especially when they feel the need to defend or preserve themselves. The survival instinct of an 8th House Moon is overwhelming and a nagging feeling that danger is around the corner can exaggerate the defense mechanisms of their particular Moon sign. They can find themselves looking for trouble when it’s nowhere near.

However, they have remarkable inner strength and resilience. People with an 8th House Moon have an uncanny ability to face the toughest times and only grow wiser and more empowered from it. Struggles only add to their emotional depth, but they must be careful of displaying a masochistic attraction to pain or darkness. With all that they’ve faced, these people make excellent counselors, helping others through their trials and dark hours. They have extraordinary people-reading skills, with an ability to “just know” things about people. This helps forge the profound connection they seek with others. 8th House Moons need intensity and depth in their relationships. Sex isn’t just a way to have fun for them but a soulful way to really know someone else. It should be said that sex really “feeds” these folks. It’s a strong emotional need and it’s best to not keep them starved, in this regard.

  2. Hi, yes I think that the Moon in the 8th gives great depth and intensity to whatever the Moon sign is. The house a planet is placed in describes where the energy of the planet and sign is directed and how it's expressed. I'm guessing you like to dig deeper below the surface than the typical Libra Moon. It might also make relationships and finding your significant other an obsessive focus in your life.

    1. ..Anyway,Scorpio Moon more intense than 8th house moon, right? Are "Moon conjunct Pluto" and "8th house Moon" equal in their intensity? Thanks for your previous answer)

    2. It's sort of splitting hairs to argue which one is "more intense." All are, in their own way. With Scorpio Moon, no matter the house it's in, the emotional responses are intense. The Moon being in the 8th or in aspect to Pluto intensifies the emotions of the Moon sign. With an Air Moon, for example, there might be more lightness. But, there's still great depth there.

  3. Aries Moon in the 8th House... how would this play out? I can't wrap my head around this combination. Aries Moon is direct, open, reckless, naive, confrontational, act-now-think-later type, and moves on quickly. 8th House Moon in deep, secretive, watchful, potentially manipulative, resentful, paranoid, has difficulty moving on or letting go, and they definitely think before they act.

    1. Hey, sorry for replying so late. But, this is a very interesting position because, on one hand, it's contradictory. Aries is open and direct while the 8th House is more about subtlety and complexity. But, they are both similar energies, in a way: passionate, intense, forceful, truth-telling. You're capable of intense emotional honesty, possibly to a degree that borders on brutal. It's important for you to be careful to not burn people with these kind of reactions and to cultivate a bit more softness when necessary. Don't go too far to emotional extremes. An 8th House Aries Moon, though, has the potential to be more compassionate and self-sacrificing than this Moon sign is typically described. You're acutely aware of people's feelings but might become too aggressive with having confrontations about feelings and putting it all on the table. You don't want anything emotionally hidden in your relationship but it might become too much for others. So, your task may be to stop digging up things all the time and just relax into it and trust your instinct to tell when someone's being honest or not.

      Hope that helps.

    2. YES.
That is my lesson with Moon in Aries in 8th.
My pursuit of deep honesty is pointless if I already know deep down.

      Delete
    3. That is my lesson.
To sometimes stop trying to dig when I possess all of the information I know already.
Some people will deny their true intentions and at the end of the day, I am just left looking crazy when I can't let things go; but KNOW deep down that something is not right.

    4. I know the feeling. Sometimes, 8th House people just need to let go and trust that they know what's really going on and acknowledge it and that, on some level, the other person does, as well. This can be the house of secrets, but not just yours. 8th House people can keep other people's secrets, as well, especially through being able to see so much about a person yet still keep their lips buttoned about what they see until the other person's ready to face it. This can be a better way to handle this energy. Not everything needs to be turned into a hard-hitting confrontation. Not everyone can handle that and, sometimes, it's best to just accept that and move on.

    5. Moon in my 8th House of Aries too, this relates to much to my daily and lifelong lessons. Thank You for sharing your wisdom. (discovering this late too sorry)
At 24, I have learnt to be less brutal to others with my emotional impulses and felt injustices, I always feel "ready" around others, is always something on the tip of my tongue if I have a feeling in my gut or they behave with harm towards others.. But I have the ability to hold my tongue too (Thankfully), and keep the secrets once I see who people are. Most days it is a tough and lively balance.

  4. The house where Mars is located and aspects to Mars is important in dispersing and using the 8th house energy. It is also a feminine marking and mother/sexual/psychology is locked inward. Explore deeply your Matriarchal blood line and some deep mysteries are awakened.

    1. Nice theory. I'm a little more interested in the modern astrology view of Pluto ruling the 8th House/Scorpio than Mars. Pluto is the higher octave of Mars, anyway, so that Mars flavor will always be there with this energy.

And I agree that if you've got either a Scorpio Moon, 8th House Moon, or Moon-Pluto aspects, then there usually is some really powerful emotional "stuff" from the mother/mother's side of the family being worked out through you. It's not always so horrible. For some people, it's naturally enriching and empowering, not all of the dark, victimized stuff. It can be deep intuition, emotional depth, inner strength, etc. There might be some exceptional creative or healing talents that are inherited.

For others, who've got the matriarchal history of the dark, victimized stuff, then this can eventually become enriching and empowering if the right attitude is taken toward working it out. This energy is perfect for any kind of creativity or cathartic activity that explores the depths.

  5. Nice write up! I really appreciate it.
I have a Sagittarius moon in the 8th house, with no planetary aspects, an 'unaspected moon' apart from a trine to my Aries ASC.
I have Mars in Sag in the 9th house opposite Jupiter.
    How would you interpret this??

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thanks!
An unaspected planet is going to express itself with a kind of purity because it's not modified or diluted in any way by the other aspects.
The trine to the Ascendant doesn't exactly make it unaspected, though. But, the Ascendant's not a planet, so the fact that it doesn't aspect any other planets is significant.

Because of this, a lot of the textbook stuff you read about a Sagittarius Moon might be true for you, especially since the trine to the Ascendant makes it easy for you to express that energy. A planet that aspects the Ascendant kind of has nowhere to hide and Sagittarius Moon's placement in the 8th House might make the planet's expression less secretive. It's more so about the emotional intensity that the 8th House energy gives it. The 8th House also heightens and sharpens Sagittarius' intuitive ability to see the truth and figure out the bigger meanings of everything.

A 9th House Mars in Sagittarius opposite Jupiter is basically super-Sagittarius, because the 9th House and Jupiter rule Sagittarius. So, you definitely have an enormous, insatiable appetite for adventure and need to find a way to keep exploring new territories without coming down with wanderlust. You might be very lucky but don't get overconfident about your luck, either. All gamblers lose, sometimes. :)

  7. Hi! I've never commented on a blog before, but I appreciated your interpretive analysis. I'm curious: how would you interpret an 8th house moon in virgo? In my chart it is trine uranus and the ascendant in capricorn and loosely conjunct the sun in leo (part of a stellium in the 8th also involving venus in leo)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thanks! Virgo Moon in the 8th has the potential to be highly neurotic, since the responses are taken to extremes. So, your need for some sort of order in your environment can become obsessive. You might be a total slave to routine and be really afraid to let go of control. Yet, there are also tremendous healing abilities available with this combination. An 8th House Virgo Moon is like a doctor, identifying the problems of others and coming up with a very effective solution, even if it might be a bit painful or uncomfortable for others. You are a very, very sharp judge of character, capable of pinpointing people's strengths and weaknesses very intuitively.

The Moon's trine to Uranus gives you a deep need for personal freedom and space. So, though you may be emotionally intense and deep, you're not too touchy feely. A Virgo Moon trine Uranus is pretty unsentimental but it's not the same thing as being unemotional, especially since your Moon's in the 8th. And it being trine the Ascendant makes your need to be a healing force in others' lives very obvious, right away, and gives you a certain warm vibe, even though you're not a very gushy, demonstrative person. Its conjunction to the Sun allows you to feel confident and empowered (Sun) through following your gut (Moon), even though they're not in the same sign.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hi, Niecy. Sorry it's taken me a little while to respond. Moon conjunct Mars in Cancer is going to be very fiercely protective of loved ones. Since it's in the 8th House, these feelings run even deeper. You can be just as protective of yourself and lash out when you feel like someone close is going to or has hurt you. Mood swings will also become more powerful. Learn to let go of resentments because I think Cancer Moon in the 8th will really hold on to them. But, the positives are that you can establish a very deep intimate connection with others, you're incredibly intuitive, and can read anybody in an instant. You can use your high emotional intelligence to have mutually satisfying close relationships with others.

  11. I'm a Gemini moon in the 8th house and I feel the same exact way as the Libra moon in 8th house comment. I don't feel likea (wont let me separate those words for some reason?) a lunar Gemini at all. I feel like I can't communicate properly like I need to, because communication is extremely important to me. And I feel like I'm just mute more than anything.. Especially since I have other placements that make me bottle up stuff too and doesn't help one bit - Scorpio rising, mercuryin Pisces, mars in Scorpio in 12th house, Neptune in 3rd house, and Chiron in 3rd house. Its just frustrating. And on top of that, moon in 8th house makes me feel extremely violent emotional wise. I want to control my emotions and sometimes they're so powerful, dark, and deep that I lose control and make a fool out of myself. This placement is hardto deal and cope with.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Having a Gemini Moon in the 8th House is definitely going to make the Gemini Moon different than the typical description, in some ways. You have much more emotional depth. But, you still have that Gemini need to communicate and with the Moon, you need to communicate your feelings. You do not have to be stuck in this bottled-up way of being. If you choose to be and just accept life like that, then you will be. But, if you consistently make a habit of pushing yourself out of this negative comfort zone and learning how to honestly communicate your feelings, you'll grow. Moon in the 8th is not all darkness and gloom. It also represents an innate ability to transform yourself. So, tap into that.

    1. You have a deep need to live a very purposeful life. You can channel a huge, sometimes obsessive amount of focus, energy, and passion into whatever goal you set for yourself. This placement makes you take commitment very seriously but can also cause you to struggle with dark, melancholy moods that you often keep hidden from others because you feel like you need to deal with it on your own. On the plus side, you're amazingly self-reliant and you have an intuitive way of just knowing things that helps you get ahead.

    1. Leo Moon in the 8th is super-passionate, always needs some sort of creative project to vent all of that intensity. But, don't turn anything and everything into a drama, either. You're very, very loyal and you're a totally heart-driven person. You also have a huge influence on other people, sometimes because you have this tremendous energy that just sweeps other people away. You also have an iron will but use this to lead and positively effect people, not to just dominate everyone.

    1. Thank you! Moon in Pisces in the 8th goes super-deep. I think this is a really fascinating placement because of all of the watery energies. You have incredible intuition and you always need to trust it. Pisces Moon in the 8th has less trouble surrendering to their very intense emotions and more trouble just dealing with them. They get so overwhelming and you need to find ways to keep from bottling them up. You have deeply irrational moments that bring out a lot of paranoia and fear. So, it's good to remind yourself of what's real and what you're just imagining. You're highly empathetic and read others' feelings in the snap of a finger. You're also definitely very mysterious, in some way or another, because you're way too complex to totally figure out.

  16. Wayman very thankful for your interpretations and your kindness. My case is about more to sinastry... if you can answer it will be awesome. I met this woman with cancer moon in the 8th house. Im a cancer myself but my sun is not in her 8th. The intensity of our connection in the beginning was amazing... but theres something that makes all this weird. She is a capricorn (sun 1st house) we have a huge opposition with our suns. From her oppinion, everything is fine but from my point of view, besides a very passionate sexual desire we do not connect anywhere else. I feel like something is missing and that is all about her needs.

    1. You might come off as even more aloof or distant because you may spend so much time trying to hide your feelings. In the end, though, you're highly emotional. Your feelings are very erratic and uncontrollable, even though you try hard to control them. And there is a part of you that's very, very willful, to the point where people telling you simple things to do or giving you their opinion in a harmless way might make you very defensive or defiant. You never, ever want to be controlled and in spite of feeling so deeply and being so sensitive, this can become a major obstacle to real intimacy. Your intuition is also strange and eerie and you feel really at home with the paranormal, the occult, super-spiritual stuff. You understand these things effortlessly.

  18. I have a Gemini moon in the 8th house and I feel like your description was accurate. Although, I do feel like a lunar Gemini. Maybe it's because I have other air sign placements like my libra ascendant and 3 other 7th house placements. I don't like to reveal everything about myself to people. I'm one of those people where someone can tell me everything about themselves and by the end of the conversation they know nothing about me. Even if I do tell them things, I will get mad at myself a min. Later because I feel like I shouldn't have said anything. I have a lot of Aries in my chart as well. I barely have any water placements other than a cancer midheaven and 3 other outer planet 4th house placements.

  20. Here's a real interesting one...a fellow I have just become involved with has the moon in Taurus in the 8th house, opposite Pluto in Libra in his 2nd.

It is strange to pick apart...trying to imagine an earthy Taurus moon acting more like a Scorpio. What are your thoughts?

I am hoping it works in my favor, as I am very Plutonian and most men can't deal with it. Would an 8th house moon male (with Venus sq Pluto I might add) tend to seek out the deep, intense ladies?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Opposite placements like that are interesting. They're definitely going to bring out the issues of the polarity. With Taurus Moon in the 8th, it's going to be an obsession with resources. I'd imagine he has (or has had in the past) a very tough time asking for help, emotionally or financially, because he always wants to rely on his own resources. He's terrified that the stability he needs is always going to be destroyed or handed to him with controlling strings attached. Hopefully, he's done or is doing the work to overcome this. He'll be able to read people in a very powerful way but his instincts will also sort of be common sense. And he'll be super-sensual and very, very loyal.

It definitely could work. I mean, anything can! He will appreciate your intensity and depth, for sure. But, I don't like splitting men and women up into Sun/Mars and Moon/Venus. We're all masculine and feminine, yin and yang. So, he'll get your Plutonian nature just because he is Plutonian. Now how he deals with that energy is another story!
