The Chart Ruler: Taurus Rising (Venus)

The next Rising sign we’re tackling in the chart ruler series is Taurus Rising. Again, like I say in all of these articles, the chart ruler is the ruling planet of your Ascendant. The chart ruler plays a very pivotal role in your life because it virtually is your life. It’s the kind of script you’ve written for yourself and the way that your life story is going to play out. For those who are born with a Taurus Ascendant, Venus is one’s chart ruler because Venus is the ruling planet of Taurus. Therefore, to be a Taurus Rising to live a life that is generally quite easy and sweet. Sure, you will have certain challenges and obstacles to overcome, just like everyone else. But, the overall tone of your life story is a nice, pleasurable one, as Venus represents all things nice and pleasurable.

Even if Taurus Ascendant people endure something very traumatic or difficult, they have a way of looking back on these experiences with a calm, balanced, even appreciative attitude. That’s because life is a calm, balanced, appreciative affair for you, as you approach it with that Taurus level-headedness. Venus is the ruler of both Taurus and Libra. This lovely planet bestows that sense of balance unto both signs. Yet, with Taurus, it’s more about practical balance: a sense of stability and security. Meanwhile, with Libra, there is an emphasis on intellectual balance: wonderful social skills and an ability to cooperate and compromise. This is why to be a Taurus Rising and a Libra Rising are two different things, even though they have the same chart ruler. Through Libra, Venus is kindhearted and thoughtful. She is also kind via Taurus but the focus is earthy and sensual.

Taurus is pretty much synonymous with “sensual” and this doesn’t, of course, just mean sexual appetite. It means an enjoyment and immersion in the pleasures of the five senses. This brings a practical sense of joy to the Taurus Rising person’s outlook on life. Why go around being all upset, anxious, or stressed out when there is so much joy available at your fingertips? There’s good food to eat, nice music to listen to, a beautiful sunset to watch. Because of Venus being your chart ruler, you are very attuned to beauty. Yet, it’s not exactly the search for a gorgeous mate or the striving to be that desirable mate that can define your Libra Rising sibling. Instead, your connection to beauty is more about the lovely things around you, just waiting to be indulged in.

You can sum up someone’s “resting face” through their Rising sign. As a Taurus Rising, yours is like that face you get when you savor a spoonful of ice cream. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising to catch you thinking about good food at any given moment. So, there often seems to be a subtle smile on your face. It’s not a big, in-your-face smile. It’s the slight grin that comes from being so at ease and enjoying the deliciousness of every moment. Taurus Rising people also have a default expression that’s very centered and peaceful. You appear to be the kind of person who is bothered by little to nothing. It’s this easygoing aura that immediately relaxes people and makes them fully enjoy being around you. While you might not behave like the life of the party like a Leo or Sagittarius Rising is prone to, you are a good time to be around. But, more so like the good time you have when you hang out in your sweatpants and watch Netflix with a bottle of wine. You’re a relaxing, un-stressful good time; the kind of fun that’s seemingly uneventful but fully enjoyable.

Since your life is ruled by the earthy side of Venus, this comes as no surprise. You have had this point of view from the beginning. Since the Ascendant says a lot about how we came into this life, it’s very common for Taurus Rising people to be really easy births. There might have been little to no struggle when you were being delivered. There was also probably a lot of good sense involved in your birth. Taurus Rising babies are often those babies who are scheduled for a certain date, patiently waited for, and then delivered on that date with little to no fuss. So, from the very beginning, you were labeled as the easy one. The way you learned to engage with your environment was through this harmonious, patient, and sensible approach.

With Venus acting as your chart ruler, this good sense is what has always kept you happy. Venus is not only about joy, though. It’s about values and being valued. Through Venus, we understand just how we’re appreciated. And you are greeted into the world with an attitude of real appreciation. I believe that it’s very rare for a Taurus Ascendant child to somehow feel unwanted or unloved, either by their caregivers or by their general environment. I’m sure such cases exist but they are very select ones, like Venus being in the 12th. Venus is about love and with this Rising sign, you have always been seen as a symbol of love, both given and received. You were probably hugged and kissed and told “I love you” consistently. Since you always felt such warm appreciation and affection from your environment, you are very capable of giving that warm appreciation and affection.

Just how you live out life as this lover will be represented by the house that Venus is in. If you have Venus in the 6th House ruling your chart, you play the role of the lover in a manner that is very helpful, productive, and efficient. If Venus is in the 11th House of your chart, your loving, affectionate demeanor is very liberated and independent, capable of appreciating and valuing other people in a tolerant, free-spirited style. Whatever the case may be, you are exuding this aura of loveliness. It’s what allows you to understand just how valuable you are. Taurus Rising people grow up with this sense of it being important to develop strong self-esteem. Whether it’s through example or through your own yearning for personal security, you develop a point of view that makes having r-e-s-p-e-c-t for oneself a real priority. It’s not about ego, like it could be for a Leo Ascendant. It’s much more about just knowing how to love yourself and understanding what you’re worth.

Whatever you value about yourself depends on the house that Venus is in. This life area will be why you believe you deserve love. With Venus in the 6th, you will live life believing that you deserve love because you’re so dedicated toward other people and you’re also so functional and put-together. If you have Venus in the 11th, you’ll live with this perspective of deserving love because, well, anything can happen and because you always end up running into love whenever you least expect it. Although these are the things that you value about yourself, I don’t think you will be vain about them. Again, I think this is the difference between the Taurus-expression of Venus and the Libra-expression of Venus. With Libra Rising folks, Venus ruling their life can make them vain. Since their Venus expression is intellectual, they want the compliments, the sweet-nothings whispered in their air, the reassurance that they’re beautiful. It becomes a mental, communicative thing.

With Taurus Rising people, Venus’ rulership just becomes a stabilizer. It keeps you on solid ground. So, you’re going to want to receive a lot of love but just for the sake of security. It’s clear to you that love is basically all you need. That’s your most valuable possession. Therefore, you don’t need to go through life being flattered and sweet-talked. Instead, you just want the consistency of somebody’s love. It’s why Taurus Ascendant people care a lot less about compliments than Libra Ascendant people do. In fact, compliment them too much or too avidly and they might get their back up. It can start to sound insincere. Libra could care less about that. They just want to hear the words. Practical Taurus wants you to back it up. Therefore, as a Taurus Rising, someone will win your heart far more easily if they just show you that they love you, instead of lavishing you with the words. Also, since you live with the attitude that love is everywhere and inside of everyone, you have a steady feeling of assurance that you will be loved and appreciated by someone, somewhere. To you, being desperate for that loving attention just seems silly and unnecessary.

However, you’re definitely going to get it as having Venus as your chart ruler just does make you highly attractive. Venus is beauty and not just physical beauty. It’s the beauty of one’s spirit and one’s nature. So, if the Ascendant is your aura, you have an aura that is just beautiful, no matter what you look like. In fact, the majority of the time, being a Taurus Ascendant ensures that you’re going to be noticeably pretty or handsome, regardless of what’s going on physically. It’s a funny thing but most people with this Rising sign have an appearance that is lovely, no matter what. Your physical features seem like they were sculpted or painted, even if your face isn’t very conventionally attractive or if your body is somewhat out-of-shape. Taurus is the sign of physicality and with this as your Ascendant (your appearance), you just have a very striking physicality.

The Rising sign is how we carry ourselves and, with this placement, you are most likely a supremely graceful being. The symbolic energy of Venus is grace, elegance, and refinement. And Taurus Rising folks are usually very elegant and sophisticated. Since this is the earthy expression of Venus, that gracefulness has a grounded quality to it. You appear to be a salt-of-the-earth kind of person but one who is utterly natural, balanced, and refined because of that. It’s like you’re as pure and as rich as the soil from the ground. But, this is why your classiness seems so unpretentious, as well. It just comes from you being so sensible and down-to-earth. You radiate all of this, even if you don’t feel that graceful on the inside. Your actual nature might even be quite awkward or nerdy. But, when we’re dealing with the Ascendant, we’re dealing with a projection of the self. So, you can put a very self-possessed foot forward, even when there is a far more unrefined side to you.

Another reason for your classiness is the unavoidable fact that Taurus is the sign of money. And as a Taurus Ascendant, your life is about money, as well; more than the average person. At the same time, you are probably less concerned with money than you’ve read. As I said before, you are your most valuable possession. Yet, since your singular perspective is focused on security, it’s not just about the security of having self-esteem and self-respect. It’s also about financial security, as well, and the accumulation of it. As a result, you can divide Taurus Rising people up into two “classes”: old-money and new-money. You’re old-money if you grew up financially comfortable and well-off, as a lot of people with this placement actually do. So, your point of view has always been about material comfort. Yet, you’re new-money if you didn’t grow up so financially secure and you’ve become determined, as a result, to stabilize yourself in this department.

Either way, you will end up building this little nest for yourself, either based on a past of always having money and never having to worry about it or a present life of getting the money that you craved having. And is that so bad? After all, you’re practical enough to know that you can’t lead the pleasurable life you want to lead without money. It’s not exactly materialistic. It’s just sensible. But, it’s not always about paying your bills. Many times, you just want that money so you can spend it, particularly on clothes. Venus is about one’s fashion sense and many people also say that the Rising sign influences your style. With Venus as your chart ruler, then, fashion is a big part of your life. This is another source of your air of elegance and class. You look for fine quality and even if you can’t afford Ralph Lauren, Chanel, or Givenchy, you will wear whatever you buy like it’s one of those labels. Thanks to your beauty-focused outlook, you most likely have excellent taste and remarkable style. Your Venus house will show just what particular style it is. If Venus is in the 1st, it can be very risky and bold. If Venus is in the 8th, it might lean more toward seductiveness and allure.

When you are experiencing your Venus Return, which will happen about once a year, you will be able to feel the love more powerfully than ever. When other people go through their Venus Return, they are being pushed to boost their self-esteem, their appreciation of others, and their ability to manifest the finer things into their life. But, you already live by all of these principles. Therefore, your Venus Return will be when life becomes even more pleasurable. And maybe you will be able to experience greater love by giving it more than receiving it. Taurus Rising individuals can realize during this time that they’re already solid. Even though you do love yourself, you aren’t totally free of insecurity. So, whatever hang-ups you do have can be balanced out during this time, making you realize how truly comfortable you are in your own skin. And by realizing this, you may be able to help the people you love get to the same place, strengthening the mutual affection.

    1. Your life is about loving others unconditionally and without ego, as well as yourself. It's very compassionate, selfless love. Yet, you're also required to have some sort of anchor that still makes you feel loved: something solitary, artistic, or spiritual that gets you in touch with divine love and helps you recharge your batteries. Then, you can be full enough to just love others without expectation.

  5. Taurus rising but my personal planets are in the 12th and Pisces (Venus & Mercury in the 11th) and Pluto in Virgo in the 5th. So my childhood was quite loveless and I was ignored......that is until puberty;)
I do love watching a sunset, flowers, good food, massage and all those Venus things. I can't say I've ever been materialistic.....at least no more than most but I do have a strong need for security. But with my personal planets in the 12th my lessons have been that real security comes from having faith in the universe through my focus on my spiritual life. Taurus rising and Taurus Mars......maybe someday I'll be just like Buhda sitting under a tree in nature calmly meditating :)

  6. Yeah thats a good definition of myself. I have a double venus lifestyle Taurus rising, Libra sun(6th house) . Although I have heard my Venus(6th house) in scorpio is not its best placement. As well as having sun intercepted makes reading some of these interpretations flip floppy for me, i.e one part is me, one part is not me, and one part is kinda me, all for one interpretation.

  9. HI Wayman, thanks for sharing, bro. hope you can still see this message. I was looking over the net but could not find a proper explanation on this: My ascendant is Taurus rising but my chart ruler, Venus squares the Ascendant and conjuncts Mars in the 4th house. Would be great if you can explain this.

  10. This was a really good article, the only thing I didn't agree on was an easy delivery when I was born, and I'm pretty sure it's because my chart ruler Venus was conjunct Pluto on the DC. It was and emergency delivery because my heart rate was dropping and they thought I was gonna die so I wAs a few weeks early.
I'm very Taurus rising and Venusian, I'm also a libra sun, but Pluto/Mars have a huge influence on my life too, I feel like it's karmic lessons to learn to balance my energies and really work with people.. All kinds of people!
