Capricorn Keeps It Classy

Capricorn is one of the most elegant and sophisticated signs, if not the most. Libra and Leo gives the sign of Capricorn a run for its money in terms of a certain classiness or dignity. But, Capricorn is probably the most accomplished and impressive in this regard. It makes sense because the essential function of Capricorn is to feel accomplished and impressive. That’s why it’s an energy that is always synonymous with “class” to me. However, it’s a classiness that is not just handed to them. I think Libra’s class can come from just being conditioned to have good manners or to respect social customs. Leo’s class can be something that is just innate; that regal quality of a king or queen that always makes you feel like they should be wearing a crown.

However, the Capricorn has to work for it, in one way or another. It can mean having to go from being this awkward duckling to a magnificent swan. Aquarius, co-ruled by Saturn, which also serves as Capricorn’s ruler, is equally familiar with this sort of transformation. But, this manifests on a more social and intellectual level, where a feeling of awkwardness growing up translates into an unpretentious, unsnobbish friendliness as an adult as well as a lack of caring what people think that lets that genius and uniqueness within shine through. With Capricorn, the transition from a challenging upbringing to a distinctive adulthood means the opposite: cultivating certain rules for oneself that will allow that success or status to be easily gained. Capricorn figures out how society works and then labors to be able to gain a secure footing in society.

Whether you are dealing with a Capricorn Sun, Moon, Rising, Venus, etc., there is an unmistakable dignity and professionalism about them, in one way or another. They might always answer their phone in a business-like way; a “hi, this is so-and-so” instead of just a casual “hello.” Their texts or e-mails could be equally down to business and to the point, sometimes in a way that could come off as curt or cold. When in their company, you feel as if there has to be a purpose to why you’re with them. And that purpose could actually be to have a good time. But, having a good time then becomes a goal and there are many guidelines that have to be followed in order to have fun.

It’s not always easy for people to deal with. These are things that could potentially rub you the wrong way. After all, Saturn is not so easy to deal with. However, just don’t take it personally or get too annoyed. The Capricorn in your life has some kind of rule-book, whatever it may be, and they follow it religiously. This is even true for the more deceptively easygoing ones. You soon realize that they’re not as easygoing as you thought. Their laidback nature has definite limits and you know it once you run against those limits, like wasting all of your breath trying to convince them to hang out with you when they have some work to finish up at home. You won’t be able to. And it’s not really stubbornness because Capricorn is not a stubborn sign. It’s a certain self-regard at play.

I wouldn’t say that Capricorn has an ego. But, they definitely have a sense of “I would never do that” which is almost on par with Leo, who does say such a thing out of ego or, to be fair, strong self-awareness. With Capricorn, it’s more about self-image. How dare you think that they’re the kind of person who would go out for drinks when they have work to finish? Someone is depending on them, after all! It’s this kind of attitude that does make Capricorn such a class act. They work for their image, for their reputation, for their recognition as someone respectable and they will not let all of that hard work go down the drain. There are certain decisions that are just beneath them. After all, Capricorn does rule the 10th House, which is the very top of the chart. And once you get to the top, you have to maintain it, which means not doing things those “at the bottom” would.

Maybe you would be irresponsible with your money or flake out on your plans with someone. But, the Capricorn individual sure won’t. Now, of course, this doesn’t mean that all Capricorn types are perfectly responsible and dependable. They can screw up, just like the rest of us. However, if they do have moments where they drop the ball or don’t do the respectable thing, you should know that they feel absolutely terrible about it, deep down, and do whatever they can to correct it in the future. This is something that can actually have a really positive manifestation in their dealings with people. The Capricorn Sun or Rising can be very quick to admit their wrongdoings and also very eager to make sure that they don’t do it again. It does, after all, take a very big person to say “I’m sorry.” Capricorn likes to be accountable for its own actions and this is another way that makes them stand out as class acts in a world where people often just do what they want and don’t care very much what the repercussions are.

Yet, when taken too far, their sense of dignity can also be something that becomes quite snobbish. There’s being classy in a self-respecting way and then there is being classy in a way that makes you feel like you’re above others. Again, the Midheaven is dignified in Capricorn. So, yes, even the most seemingly humble of Capricorn types can feel as if they are above you. If not, then they secretly want to be and work hard for that status. It’s something that can permeate the way they dress and the kinds of people that they associate with. Part of the reason why the Capricorn Moon prefers to be self-sufficient is because they often believe that you’re not competent enough or dependable enough to help them anyway. The Capricorn Ascendant person can be so cautious or careful with new people because they instinctively see many people as not being worth their time whatsoever.

Make no mistake: Capricorn can have a serious superiority complex to work through. But, the funny thing about a superiority complex is that it’s really not that different from an inferiority complex. It’s just that a superior attitude is that person’s way of compensating for their insecurities. Capricorn can also be really insecure and it’s why they put so much effort into having certain things or being seen in a certain way. The thing that will help them get over such a complex is knowing that they were born to be great and to be somebody important. Capricorn people have a tremendous amount of potential and, deep down inside of them, they know it. There is just this struggle within to constantly live up to that potential. But, if they relax into the journey, they will find themselves achieving all that they set out to.

Then, the classiness that they exude can be a more natural variety of dignity and elegance; the kind that just comes from who they are. Once they find their footing, Capricorn types don’t fumble. After going through that painfully awkward period growing up, it’s like they learn all the necessary rules and regulations, whether it’s in career, relationships, socializing, or just being themselves. The Sun in Capricorn person, in particular, becomes highly conscious of all of the rules they need to follow just to express their true self. They become very shrewd in this sense and you could call it calculating. But, the truth is that Capricorn needs structure as if it were oxygen. The trick is that it has to be the right structure for them. Every Capricorn’s handbook is different. It all depends on the individual and their chart. Some have looser rules, some have stricter rules, some are more self-focused and some are more other-oriented. But, they all thrive on guidelines, in some way.

Once they have defined these guidelines, the true grace and sophistication of Capricorn emerges. This is why Capricorn folks get increasingly comfortable and relaxed with themselves as they get older. Adulthood comes equipped with certain rules that have to be followed, whether it has to do with work, paying your bills, dealing with relationships, having a family, etc. While some people can complain about this transition, this is truly when Capricorn begins to find its stride, as anyone with basic astrology understanding knows. They come into their own once they have these structures to adhere to. And, also, once their structure is in place, they get a clear, pragmatic sense about what they need to do in order to maintain it. This means using their maturity and wisdom to keep that part of their life functioning and refined.

But, this doesn’t only apply to “serious” stuff. Capricorn knows how to make just about anything work. When many of these individuals dress, they dress to impress or for success. It’s no surprise why many of our biggest fashion icons – from Marlene Dietrich to David Bowie to Michelle Obama – were born with their Sun in Capricorn. Although some would argue that a Capricorn Venus and/or Ascendant would influence style more, if something can create the right image, the Capricorn influence can be felt through it. They know how to combine their pragmatism with their shrewd understanding of how to play the game. If a Capricorn is into fashion, they will read the pages of Vogue or GQ like it’s the Bible. A fashion-conscious Capricorn type will know exactly what is out of season and what is in season and what the emerging trends are, as well as what’s coming back. And they take all of this wisdom and use it to put their outfit together and to build their overall wardrobe successfully. They’d also usually be the types to take fashion advice as well as they give it (although Bowie was an Aquarius Rising, so he only cared about his own unique sartorial rules, in the end).

This can be seen in how the Capricorn deals with people, as well. Capricorn is a sign that is very much into self-help of any kind. First of all, self-help is a term that was probably invented by notoriously capable Capricorn. Second of all, most of them really want to feel as if they are successfully interacting with other people. You might see a truly destructive Capricorn Moon every now and then or a Capricorn Rising who doesn’t care at all about evolving as a person. But, they are rare types whose feelings of inferiority run too deep, probably from an unhealthy upbringing, and who are too unable to pull themselves out of the self-defeat to change. Otherwise, this is a sign that does want to be very effective with people. For all the crap that Capricorn gets about being a drag or a negative influence, these are actually some of the most proactive people you’ll ever meet. They’re just realistic in that proactivity.

So, this realistic attitude about their flaws leads them to want to constantly be better. In this sense, the classiness of Capricorn can manifest as someone who is always taking the high road. It’s no surprise at all that our beloved Former First Lady Michelle Obama inspired millions of people with her “when they go low, we go high” motto. This is the elegance of the sign at play. Instead of petty fights, vulgar insults, tiresome complaining, and other immature carrying on, the Capricorn person would rather opt for the classy response: intelligence, accountability, maturity, kindness. They keep their chin up in ways that impress the rest of us. They also excel at being the adults in a situation, which is evident even in the youngest of Capricorns. If an apology or a compromise would fix the situation, they will usually do it. Libra does the same thing but to keep the peace. Capricorn does it just because they feel like it’s the responsible or the respectable thing to do.

It’s the sort of thing that can make them seem above everyone to other people, as well. They just do things or deal with things in a way that most can only aspire to. In this sense, Capricorn is in its own league. And they could seem out of your league, as well, which is something that lends them that famously intimidating quality. Whether it’s through proper speech, impeccable style, stately presence, or rigorous intelligence, they just seem ridiculously polished. I’ve noticed that all three of the transpersonal signs – Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces – come off as being on a completely different level than everyone else. They are beyond the rest of the signs in their understanding and temperament. Pisces appears to be off in some ethereal, magical world of its own making. Aquarius is the alien visitor that shocks and surprises others with its strangeness and brilliance.

Capricorn, on the other hand, is just of another time. Not ahead of its time, like Aquarius; more so immersed in the time that has already past and come to fruition. It’s a big part of where that class comes from, contributing to the notorious old-soul quality that can make young people with Capricorn placements act more like they’re from another generation. It’s evident in the Millennial with this influence who almost entirely listens to music from the 80’s or 90’s. It’s also clear in the fact that this is a person who usually reveres their parents or grandparents to the degree of taking all of their advice and honoring the wisdom they have to offer. In the end, it’s that love of the rules at play. Since they feel most comfortable with what’s established, they would rather stick to the things that have already been tried and proven to be solid.

  2. We're Neptune in Capricorn. We're in fall. And Saturn will be conjunct our neptune. I assuming just based on word play that will be falling into rulership.

What will the transit be like?

I'm excited to see your inverse nodal return play out. I'vr bet you've got a lot of fun ideas.

    1. Yes but, in your case, this isn't about your sense of self or your needs. It's more so about how you think things through and how you communicate with people.

    2. Thanks, Wayman :) Oh,sorry I forget to ask earlier if it also applies to person whose Saturn squares his/her Sun?

  8. my beautiful friend is a sun Capricorn. hard childhood...failed her exams....finally got to medical school. fell pregnant...nearly died.. and now is senior partner in a doctor's surgery where you have to wait for weeks to get an appointment with her, as her patients love her.And all the red wine she gets given as gifts, she gives to me!! Lovely article! Capricorn Scorpio and Virgo were the most maligned signs in the zodiac. Scorpio and Virgo have made a "comeback" so yaay to our Cappy friends! ( I can see them now shaking their classy heads at that nickname!!)

  9. It's about time I read something other than the achieve-or-die, money grubbing nonsense about Capricorn! Maybe it's my Sagittarius rising, but I never related to that stereotype. Thank you, sir. Wonderfully written and insightful!

  10. My most recent ex is a Leo sun with a capricorn Moon and ascendant. So yeah, he really needed to feel like The Man; magnetic and full of life, but crazy bossy, tirelessly ambitious and aaall business. He's incapable of being happy if he doesn't have just a tiny slice of *something* to rule - obviously, this plays out in his career where he can be a high stakes power player with expensive watches. How he views himself is incredibly rooted in who he is profesionally - he once told me he doesn't like wearing suits whenever he's not feeling confident enough, because "I respect a suit too much".

The memory of it is really cracking me up because god damn it Capricorn! A little mystified by my sister though, born with her sun/moon/mars in capricorn. I love her, but ambitious, responsible and classy are only on the list of top ten words to describe her if we read that list starting from the bottom..

    1. Haha yes, Capricorn men do really love to suit up. It's like a part of their soul or something. Even if they don't wear suits regularly, when they do, they feel better or more like themselves. Capricorn women love wearing suits, too. It's just a thing with this sign. That's one of the many reasons why I realized I'm not a Capricorn Rising because I have zero respect for suits and find them so boring and predictable. My Aquarius Rising needs to be different and not look like every other guy in the room. I love dress clothes as much as casual ones but I wear them in a unique way.

    2. I believe I'm the rare Capricorn who doesn't fit any of this. I have the Sun, Mars and Mercury there and I am flakier than a croissant and fickler than the wind. My brother, bless him, is a double Capricorn who loves posting pics of him meeting sales goals and workout goals but also has been a teddy bear collector for years.

    3. House placements and aspects can make a big difference in how the energy is expressed. But you, of course, are a Capricorn in some significant ways and you do fit some of this, in your own way, whether that means just being very self sufficient or needing to know the rules before you do something.

  11. I've always liked people who are more mature. For example, when I was little, I interacted way more with the teachers than with other students. Of course, I had a few friends my own age, but I just found myself relating to the adults more often. I also don't get why Capricorn gets such a bad rap, because I think they're wonderful people! The best friend I ever think I had was a Capricorn. It was quite a while ago; I was in 4th grade and she in 3rd, but then she moved the bext year. Still, it was a very memorable friendship. In my own natal chart, I have jupiter in Capricorn so I find that when I meet someone with a placement or placements in Capricorn, it's a great rapport. Lastly, Michelle Obama is one of my favorite people because she's such a beautiful person, inside and out. And I'll ALWAYS love the starman. May he forever R.I.P

  12. Loved this article Wayman! I'm a Libra Sun, Capricorn moon and Saturn trine Venus. Really related to this a lot! Since I was young I've always been told that I'm an old soul. Oh and I laughed at the self-help comment because I'm currently reading a self-help book! Lol

  13. Venus in Cap, Saturn conj. midheaven. Def feel the Capricorn, especially when it comes to self-improvement and the way I keep my house, which is tidy, minimalist, and neat. Also: most people guess my age 10 years younger than I am!

  14. I also feel Saturn/Capricorn-ish! Sun opposite Saturn, venus & mars trine saturn, & jupiter & mc sextile saturn. Neptune in Cap also

That part about the email really hit home as well. Even if it's a silly message to my little sister, I have to follow the rules of block formatting. I can't help it! It's just not done!

  16. Wow, this describes me to a T. Capricorn sun, mercury and mars. I am all about the rules! Even made up one. Drives my poor Gemini sun husband nuts. I never knew it was such a big Capricorn trait. I have definitely become more relaxed and fun loving as I have gotten older. Great article, thank you!
