Uranus in the 12th House

The second to last article in my Uranus in the houses series is for Uranus in the 12th House. Uranus’ influence already lends a certain wildness and strangeness to the matters of that house. But, having a 12th House Uranus can just be a profoundly strange, life-long experience that you will never entirely understand. The 12th House symbolizes matters that are beyond us in so many ways. This can be in a spiritual, metaphysical, intuitive, or empathetic sense. In any case, this is the house where we stretch beyond our own personal experiences as well as beyond the material and temporal plane. It’s already confusing to have a planet in the 12th House but to have Uranus here is probably one of the most confusing 12th House placements. If Uranus is where we find our mental freedom, a person with this influence has a lot of letting go and healing to do before they can reach the state of consciousness needed in order to taste that freedom.

In most cases, planets in the 12th House describe a person’s prenatal experiences and how they affected the individual on a highly unconscious level. The 12th House person is, then, always simultaneously yearning for that state but terrified of being engulfed by it, in some way. Uranus in the 12th means that the mother’s pregnancy was most likely very chaotic. Much like Jupiter in the 12th, this can symbolize a mother who was not ready to give up her freedom in order to go through this nine-month-ordeal. There may have even been a sense of dread or foreboding about the perceived loss of freedom inherent in being a mother. The 12th House Uranus’ mom could have been constantly going against the grain of what pregnant women should “normally” do, in some fashion or another. Instead of happily glowing and awaiting the due date, she may have been anxious, frazzled, impatient, or vaguely bored and detached from it all. A sense of distance crept in, as if she was watching some other woman have morning sickness and weight gains and odd cravings. Speaking of oddness, her food cravings could’ve been really outlandish and she may have become seriously accident-prone during this time, as well.

In utero, a feeling was implanted inside of you that made you equally frightened of giving up your freedom as well as just as unaffected and detached from what was actually happening. Through this link with your mother, you became very used to chaos and embracing the unexpected. (Speaking of which, Uranus in the 12th could mean that your conception was so unexpected that it was hard to even believe) So, when you came out of the womb, you had this side of you that was just overwhelmingly unpredictable, odd, and free. 12th House planets are usually expressed in extremes early in life until feelings of guilt, fear, and victimization settle in for just having those traits. With Uranus in the 12th, it could be a profound sense of terrible things happening whenever you expressed your freedom and individuality. People with this placement can grow up in very repressive homes, in one way or another, that do not encourage the uninhibited expression of one’s quirks and independent ideas. Sometimes, this is because one or both parents were made to feel really bad about themselves for being different or individualistic, at some point in life, and instill those phobias within you. So, you unconsciously learned to tuck those traits away in order to survive.

There may have been a sense, in your early environment, that it was really important to fit in and not cause too much of a stir. As a result, 12th House Uranus individuals learn how to become very good at blending in and just easily going with the flow. A part of you was so kooky and so erratic that you soon became ashamed of it somehow. There could have been people, including one or both caregivers, who made you feel bad for being so different. It was like you just didn’t have any space to be an individual. You also may have just gotten a lot of side-eye for those wacky ideas that were always coming to you. So, in order to survive, you thought it was better to just hide those elements of yourself. However, no energy truly stays hidden. 12th House energy always finds a way to re-emerge and when it does, it is usually destructive. Even though you became a chameleon to adjust to your early environment, and subsequently life itself, your repressed yearning for freedom has always had a messy way of coming back up to the surface.

One way this can happen is through desperate forms of escapism. Since Uranus is how we free ourselves intellectually, having Uranus in the 12th means that you feel the freest when you are in your own little world. Otherwise, it’s hard for you to express that independence or individuality, making you easily overwhelmed. Without that sense of what makes you different, you can feel so much like other people to the point of taking on their personality traits and mannerisms and perspectives. It often happens without you even realizing it because you lack any sense of psychic boundaries between you and the other person. This is problematic in many ways, including your lack of a perspective or identity that is separate from other people. So, you are always absorbing what other people think and say as if they are your own thoughts or words. It’s no surprise, then, that Uranus in the 12th House people, when living unconsciously, can seem to lack originality or be major copycats, just doing what other people do and saying what other people say.

But, there is something about this that suffocates you and exhausts you. It’s like you can never get a real break when you’re around others because you’re always merging their psychic energy with others. This is why being alone and away from others is often your only form of true freedom. When you have this solitary time, you can clearly see what separates you from others and what makes you different. It’s also why solitude is crucial for you because you need that time to detach. It’s actually healing and peaceful for you. When you don’t have that time to detach, you lack this inner serenity to a degree that becomes troublesome. You’ll then be increasingly distant and detached in subtle, covert ways, whether that means totally checking out and not paying attention to others or becoming more and more unreachable, until others wonder if you’re even in your own skin.

Sometimes, it feels as if you’d just be better off leaving your own body, which is what attracts many 12th House Uranus people to astral travel. It’s like the more you are in this human form, here on earth, the less liberated you feel. These are struggles that, again, occur on an unconscious level and they can drive you in strange ways. Your detachment can also make you more and more unassociated with yourself. A common complaint with Uranus in the 12th is that there are plenty of days where you don’t know what you think anymore. It’s like your mind is being taken over by aliens, which could actually be an oddly comforting thought for you. The process of working out what’s going on in your head can be far too terrifying for you. It’s similar to Mercury in the 12th but it operates on a deeper level because you’re resisting all of these unusual thoughts, feelings, and fantasies, uncertain if they belong to you or to someone else or to someone you’ve never even met.

This is all what can make it very easy for Uranus in the 12th House folks to project their weirdness on to people on a mass scale, blaming them for being too odd, too inconsistent, or too distant. It might seem like people just hold themselves at arm’s length from you all the time or that they are too hard to pin down or predict. But, the truth is that this is your inner life rising up to your consciousness and you just can’t entirely deal with it. A part of you will never feel free until you do. This is why you can get so utterly lost in alone time. It’s also why you can make sudden changes or breakaways at very inopportune times, without knowing what you’re doing. It’s like everyone is sucking you dry and exhausting you and you’ve just got to cut loose. Actual feelings of claustrophobia or being trapped can settle in, as well, especially when you’re overwhelmed.

Because you can feel tied down by people who take advantage of you, you may also become surprisingly cold and unsympathetic in the face of other people’s problems. Uranus’ house placement operates in and on-and-off fashion for us. So, with Uranus in the 12th, there are times where you are wonderfully empathetic and times where you can be truly insensitive. This may really shock you because you never want to think of yourself like that. Yet, when you do become aloof, particularly in the face of someone’s suffering, this is a sign that you are not independently dealing with your own suffering enough. This placement can create a ton of inner pain and sadness and loneliness on the inside that you just keep running away from because it’s easier to not pay attention to it. You might not want to get to attached to suffering, whether that’s yours or someone else’s, because you fear that it will just weigh you down and prevent you from reaching that elusive state of freedom. So, you may either be terribly out-of-touch with your inner life or with what’s happening with others on a deeper, more subtle sort of level.

The solution to this is to gain the higher consciousness that the 12th House represents by knowing that, with Uranus in the 12th, the day-to-day world will never be freeing enough or accepting enough for you. There is a lot of pain you harbor in terms of being misunderstood or rejected. I’ve found that the 12th House Uranus, though, is usually very unconscious and unaware of being an outcast or misfit or tortured genius until some crucial breakthrough moment in life. This is when the illusion shatters and you come face-to-face with your inner pain. By working through this inner melancholy or sadness around what makes you different, you will come to see that everyone feels a bit misunderstood or rejected, at some point or on some level. This is an essential part of your humanity that you have to embrace because it allows you to heal yourself and others.

Uranus shows us how there is really no such thing as normal. Uranus in the 12th means accepting that, on a wider and collective scale, no human being is truly “normal.” This awakens your amazing compassion for yourself and others. It starts with yourself, once you realize that the “real world” can be a harshly judgmental, unaccepting place and that there isn’t limitless room for this higher sense of inclusiveness and tolerance on this earthly plane. You strengthen your spiritual awareness by tapping into that unconditional acceptance for your fellow man. Doing this allows you to align yourself with the Higher Power. Spirituality will be one of the ways in which you free yourself, knowing that the Creator loves you and accepts you for all of your differences and oddities. So, in the face of worldly rejection, you can feel a deeply internal sense of belonging. By developing this relationship with the Source (or the Universe or the Higher Power, however you want to call it), you’ll be able to engage with the day-to-day world with no expectations of such acceptance.

This is how the selflessness of the 12th expresses itself. You rise above the ego when you let go of this concept of morphing and changing yourself in order to fit in and hide what makes you different. Your egoless state is found through non-conformity. It’s an energy that you won’t express too directly, though. You will just feel it from deep within and will be able to tap into it when you’re alone or engaged in your spiritual time. By doing so, you won’t feel the need to try and be someone that you’re not. This will make you a wise, touching influence in others’ lives by encouraging them to not be someone that they’re not. You can bless them by providing them with a lack of judgment that they can’t get from most people. Uranus in the 12th House people are here to be beacons of acceptance in that way, all while loving or forgiving others in spite of their inability to be as encouraging of their differences.

12th House planets are the highest, most ideal expression of that energy when they’re consciously expressed. So, Uranus in the 12th House people can express the independence, unique intellect, freedom of spirit, and startling intuitiveness of this planet without falling into the patterns of being too bizarre, defiant, all over the place, or distant from other people. If you do fall into these patterns, it will be deeply painful and it will show you just how much you need to access that inner freedom in a more peaceful, conscious manner. Still, since our Uranus house does not unfold in a conventional fashion, your road to redemption is not smooth and predictable. There is usually a lot of backsliding or falling off the wagon that a 12th House Uranus individual has to go through in order to find their salvation. You are a true sinner and saint in one package because you are very aware of this higher self but also just as open to your messier, more problematic sides.

In terms of actual addictions, this can be particularly tricky to navigate. Uranus in the 12th House is probably most liable toward substance or alcohol abuse out of any other planet here because there is such an exhilarating freedom that comes with that state of mind. The 12th House can say a lot about how you are when you’re under the influence. With this placement, your drunk self (or your high self) can go absolutely crazy. You are probably walking chaos whenever you’re not sober and could find yourself finally able to shake off all of those influences that keep swaying you this way and that way. In fact, your non-sober self can seriously shock people, in one way or another. But, since we have a hard time controlling our Uranus, it can be really difficult for you to control your intake, which only creates even more unexpected chaos during these times. The good thing is that, one day, you can decide to just do away with it altogether. This, of course, applies to those who are social drinkers or recreational users than flat-out addicts. But, even with alcoholics or drug abusers, when you want to make a change, you can do it overnight and quite radically.

Since things can get so crazy and messy for you when you’re not sober, it’s probably way better for you to find that state of freedom through spirituality or art. There is a certain brilliance to Uranus and, as an artist, you can express that genius in an amazing way. In fact, 12th House Uranus individuals usually don’t seem very intellectual until they engage in their art. In fact, unfortunately, you might be easily labeled as a bit “dumb” by people, in a general sense. But, you are certainly intelligent. You just probably have a hard time articulating yourself and getting your point across in a strictly logical, direct sense. It just gets expressed in this very intuitive, otherworldly way.

This not only applies to your artistic talent but your uniquely empathetic understanding of humanity. You possess a strange compassion that just hits you like lightning, allowing you to acutely comprehend anyone’s perspective. This obviously can be channeled into your art to amazing results. Your hidden yet powerful intellect also is evident in the fascinating way you go about your art. You can access visions, ideas, and techniques as an artist that no one has ever thought of before. In your artistic life, you create another world where you can totally get loose. No one is judging you in this Universe, so you’re free to do whatever you want. Brilliant spells of artistic inspiration and a refusal to conform to the rules of the craft can define the 12th House Uranus artist.

Much of this can come from your dream life, which is very interesting, to say the least. You might have incredibly vivid dreams, in a manner that no one else does, and understand all of the strange symbolism in your dreams like it’s a second language. All of your inner weirdness comes out in your dream life, so the fantasies that dance through your head at night may freak you out, at times. This can contribute to the recurring, unpredictable spells of insomnia that you deal with.  Sometimes, you are far too wired and keyed-up at night to sleep, as you can be an absolute night owl. Other times, you might fall into a deep sleep as soon as you hit your pillow, desperate to escape your day-to-day concerns. It’s just all dependent on how your night is going.

  1. Amazingly accurate.. I have Venus, Saturn and Neptune conjunct my Uranus (all in Capricorn, all in twelfth house).. Needless to say it is a total chaos in and around my search for purpose in life.. My art, music, fantasy novels and TV series (like Game of Thrones) are what make me feel "normal" and constitute my "zone of sanity" as I call it..that blame game part in your article was spot on.. I am notoriously known for being very elusive, distant and unavailable occasionally and I keep complaining why won't they leave me alone..And true, it is not always like that.. I am very warm and available otherwise.. but when someone else gives me a silent treatment I become miserable.. My own imagination becomes my biggest enemy and it is very painful indeed.. Even my dreams take up the theme of my recent trauma and makes me relive it again and again until I pay attention and do something about it.. And being cold to other's suffering is what I recently observed in myself when in the wake of my father's passing away I completely shut out the world and their sympathy, while carrying on with all the other obligations to be taken care of afterwards.. Detached, yet involved. People find my ways of dealing with the grief very cold and shocking,i know.. All the angst is being channeled into my art now and somehow I am finding it fascinating how vivid my imaginations and insights have become.. But all I feel is that I have become increasingly detached from my spirituality and my sense of self.. Major grounding needed.. As of now.. I am floating..

  2. amazing. i am known as an empath....yet i can suddenly become so detatched and cool it scares me. i can undestand why now. i grew up in a very repressive home and am now quite wild. i hid my wierdness at school. then became a vegan pagan priestess in my twenties! lol. totally agree with the lovely Debroshi who commented above.. Game of Thrones is normal isnt it? lol!!! my uranus is unaspected as well and it is only because he is conjunct my descendant at this moment in time AND opposite my venus, that i have finally sat down and talked to him ( as stephen arroyo suggests you do when going through a transit.) he has been there the whole time!! astrology....art...wackiness

wayman i have studied astrology since i was 12..so 35years!!!! and you are breathtakingly brilliant! thank you!!!!xxx

    1. I can't say that I didn't see this coming, because I did. I, at one time, asked myself, what is he still doing here, with a free-hosted blog? And, when you created the YouTube channel, i sighed: that's more like it, a great step.

I'd have loved to still have you here, because I prefer reading to watching, but you deserve better! Your articles are great and wonderfully written. They are precise as much as they are incise. Articulate and enlightening. I enjoyed and benefitted from every time I spent on this web-space—and might still spend, to hoard.

But time comes when the curtain has to be drawn, for the pursuit of better goals. So, I wish you the best of tomorrow. May the odds be ever in your favor!

  4. Thank you for this article Wayman! You helped shed light on a lot of my unconscious patterns. Your descriptions are also very accurate (I have Uranus conjunct Neptune in the 12th house).

  5. Again, a beautifully written article... I have Uranus conj Jupiter in 12th and it acts as an antenna for thoughts and feelings around me (so grateful for this as I can spot inauthenticity a mile away). I am always able to discern the collective unconscious and this access can burn me out if I'm not careful, as the planets are in an air sign grand trine. And being so close to the ASC, peeps refer to me as the fairy godmother free spirit! Such good advice to take some solitary retreat time as a recovery recommendation for this placement. Thank you!!

  6. Do you offer chart interpretations privately?

  7. Thank you so much for this deconstruction of uranus in 12th. I have uranus, mars and pluto in 12th all retrograde. In Uranian space now...I'm not going crazy, everything is perfect and as it should be.

  8. So true, it brought tears in my eyes... Thank you

  9. That was intense! My Uranus (12th) makes a grand air trine with my Saturn (8th) and Moon (4th). I think my "art" comes through counseling others where I must just speak what I see and feel which isn't palpably in the room and this ends up helping my client unlock parts of themselves and being more free in therapy. It's like bringing life out of their deeeeep hiding places into a secret light where they can safely sort through it. Hmm....certainly a lot to think about here Wayman. You are just brilliant!

  10. Thank you!
Scorpio Uranus in 12th house in grand trine with Pisces Mercury & Cancer Jupiter
astral travel while dreaming - both exhilarating and terrifying!!!

  11. I have both my Uranus and Neptune in 12th house..God is this accurate!! The childhood part especially..ssly I need to find my inner source. Also art has always been my savior be it dancing or drawing..Your blog is amazing.
